Yi-tsi Mei FeuerwerkerIn the 20th century, Chinese elites viewed the division between intellectuals and peasants as a central concern of literature, and focused on the confrontation between the writer/intellectual self and the peasant "other." The author argues that in the process, they created the "peasantry," the downtrodden masses seen as proper objects of political action and shifting ideological agendas.
